Research abstract

High power single-mode diode lasers are required for numerous applications in fiber optics; in free-space optical communications, one must add the requirement of eye safety (1.5+ um wavelength) as well. Phase I proposes to combine a novel large-aperture single-mode diode laser cavity structure with the eye-safe-emission, regrowth-friendly InGaAsP material system and unique optics to realize a collimated-output 1 W or higher eye-safe, diffraction-limited laser diode.
