Research abstract

The following proposal describes a conceptual thermionic converter configuration and operating mode which, if successfully developed could provide 12-15% efficiwent thermionic energy conversion at cathode temperatures below 1500K. The concept builds on experimental work done in the United States on "Hybrid-mode" converters, and on improvements made in the Former Soviet Union which demonstrated greater than 12% conversion efficiency at cathode temperatures less than 1500K. The proposed thermionic converter concept makes use of electrical insulation to separate, or "split", different sections of the cathode or anode to better optimize the characteristics of hybrid-mode thermionic converters. These "split" electrodes", when combined with previously demonstrated hybrid-mode thermionic operation provide the potential for practical, low temperature thermionic energy conversion for commercial and military electric power generation.
