Research abstract

High voltage insulators are critical components in high-energy accelerators and pulsed power systems. However, due to flashover at the dielectric interface, these insulators often fail at electric fields that are an order-of-magnitude lower than their intrinsic dielectric strength. This project will develop numerical models ¿ based on existing particle-in-cell codes, global models, and hybrid fluid models ¿ for analyzing the surface breakdown of dielectric insulators. The models will be integrated into an existing software framework for modeling high voltage and high RF power devices, thereby reducing the costs associated with overdesign and preventing the failure of critical components. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The application of these tools to the insulator breakdown problem would enable the design and optimization of the next generation of dielectric insulator structures for pulsed power and accelerator applications. In addition to applications for DOE accelerators, the technology should find use in systems for national security, nuclear weapons science, defense, and industry.
