Research abstract
We have been closely involved with ARPA's Commercial Communications Techno. Testbed (C2T2) project, and as part of a Phase I SBIR, developed low-cost electronic security measures for personal communications equipment. We demonstrated a proof-of-concept during Phase I itself, that has generated tremendous interest with 21st Century Land Warrior as well as PM-Soldier. C2T2 prime contractor wasn't ready with a platform for us to demonstrate security measures; consequently, we went beyond our original scope of work, and created a networked platform ourselves, implementing a multi-soldier scenario. Leveraging our hands-on experience and existing prototype, we propose developing (using COTS technology where possible) the following capabilities:- Determine a user's position both within buildings and in the open (so a commander can centrally observe the deployment of his forces)- Data Conferencing techniques to handle data, audio and video (essential for C3I)- Sensing and computing sniper location using Military Police as distributed sensors- GPS based, low-cost co-operative IFF- Voice based (hands-free, eyes-free) command and control of equipmentShawn Systems continues to bring expertise in designing systems where we bridge the gap between expensive, proprietary solutions, and low-cost, COTS technologies.
