Research abstract

The objective of the Phase II effort is to design, develop, anddemonstrate the basis for a modular Power Electronic BuildingBlocks type architecture for moderate power level Navy militaryand industrial power systems. This effort will continue thework on modular mechanical and electrical components but refinethe scope and emphasize controls issues. The intent is tohighlight the capability to interleave three phase modules tocreate a scaleable architecture based on a common buildingblock. Work done in the PEBB Controls Plug and Play initiativewill be used as a starting point for a smart gate drivearchitecture that will facilitate a flexible power electronicstopology with an emphasis on paralleling and interleaving ofthree phase modules. An overall architecture for system levelcontrol, communications and software will be examined anddeveloped that also emphasizes modularity, reconfigurability, reuse and maintainability in conformance to the building blocksconcept. Manufacturing design for longer term will integrate theDesign for Manufacturability aspects from the AutomotiveIntegrated Power Module and manufacturing commonality so that theNavy and DoD in general can leverage the low cost manufacturingprocesses and robust designs developed for the automotive anddistributed power generation markets
