Research abstract

THE ABILITY TO BUILD INFLATABLE PARABOLOID REFLECTORS WITH A SURFACE RMS ACCURACY OF 0.76MM HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATED. THE MAJOR SOURCE OF ERROR IS THE STIFF SEAMS NEEDED WHEN LARGE REFLECTORS ARE MADE. THIS PROGRAM WILL EXAMINE METHODS OF IMPROVING THE SEAM CONFIGURATION TO REDUCE SURFACE ERROR TO 0.1MM OR LESS. LABORATORY CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING OF CANDIDATE SEAMS IN THIN FILM WILL BE NEEDED TO EVALUATE THE CONCEPTS. A VARIETY OF CONCEPTS, MANY OBTAINED DURING A SURVEY OF FLIM MANUFACTURERS, WILL BE EXPLORED, AND THE MOST PROMISING IDENTIFIED.
