Research abstract
75125-Chain growth reactions, such as oligomerizations and polymerizations, are typically energy intensive. It would be advantageous to reduce the energy consumption of these reactions and simultaneously make them more selective to the desired products. In this project, reactive distillation will be used to improve reactor product quality while reducing the energy required for the chain growth reactions. Two sample systems, Fischer-Tropsch reaction and Oligomerization precursors have been selected to demonstrate this concept. In Phase I, reactive distillation and fixed-bed reactors will be constructed and operated. The results will be compared with respect to reactor product quality and overall energy savings. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The use of reactive distillation for Fischer-Tropsch processes should significantly reduce the cost of producing ultra-clean fuels from natural gas. Also, reactive distillation can significantly reduce the energy required for oligomerization and polymerization reactions.
