Research abstract

EPIDEMIOLOGIC DATA PROCESSING AND SUBSEQUENT STATISTICAL ANALYSIS TO OBTAIN ESTIMATES OF THE MEASURES OF INTEREST CAN NOW BE DONE FOR RELATIVELY LARGE SERIES BY MICROCOMPUTERS. MICROCOMPUTERS ALLOW AN INEXPENSIVE, FAST, AND THEORETICALLY VALID ANALYSIS OF DATA. HOWEVER, THE PROGRAMS THAT ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ARE NOT USER FRIENDLY AND HENCE CANNOT BE USED BY PEOPLE WITHOUT SPECIAL TRAINING; DO NOT INTERFACE WITH MAINFRAME COMPUTERS, E.G., FOR DATA RETRIEVAL AND DATA PROCESSING; AND DO NOT HAVE CONVENIENT INPUT/OUTPUT OF DATA/RESULTS VIA TABLES, PLOTS, ETC. COMPUTER SOFTWARE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING THEORETICALLY CORRECT RESULTS AND AT THE SAME TIME BEING EASY TO USE AND INPUT/OUTPUT VERSATILE WOULD BE AN INDISPENSABLE ANALYSIS TOOL FOR EPIDEMIOLOGY. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO DEVELOP SUCH SOFTWARE. IT 1.WILL BE USER FRIENDLY, 2.WILL ALLOW DATA TO BE DOWN-LOADED OR KEY-ENTERED, 4.WILL BE CAPABLE OF PROCESSING AT LEAST 1500 RECORDS OF 10 VARIABLES (POSSIBLY 30) EACH, AND 5.WILL BE ABLE TO PRODUCE OUTPUT IN ALPHANUMERIC OR GRAPHIC FORM. IN PHASE I TWO SUCH MODULES FOR ANALYSIS OF EPIDEMIOLOGIC DATA AND ONE FOR A BIBLIOGRAPHY PRINTING FROM A GIVEN DATABASE WILL BE DESIGNED. BASED ON RESULTS OF PHASE I, DESIGN OF ADDITIONAL COMPUTER MODULES FOR ANALYSIS OF EPIDEMIOLOGIC DATA WILL BE PROPOSED FOR PHASE II.
