Research abstract

This project develops and tests a microlearning curriculum on Modern Home Economics for Independent Living to be used on the LearningQ platform by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their caregivers. Project objectives are to build 25 high-engagement skill units covering the basics of modern home economics, supporting access to caregivers for learners with IDD; demonstrate participant engagement, understanding, and retention of modern home economics skills by utilizing site-based analytics, skill assessments, retention data, and user surveys and interviews; and increase the availability of independent living skills training by offering virtual classes and independent study. Project outcomes include participants with IDD gaining awareness of life skills via improved access to home economics training, enabling greater independence; reduced workload for agency staff and more efficient support per participant, allowing them to serve a larger audience; and reducing skill degradation over time through weekly recap and recommendation tools.
