Research abstract

The proposed work will test the feasibility of using a relatively new three-equation turbulence model to achieve accurate predictions of nonequilibrium turbulence in flows related to high-lift systems for military aircraft. It has been demonstrated analytically and in calculations of nonequilibrium flows, including boundary layer transition and adverse pressure gradient flows, that the new model has properties which should make it superior to existing "state-of-the-art" eddy-viscosity models. Phase I will test the accuracy of the new model in a range of fundamental and high-lift flows. The Phase I option will test one of the valuable features of the new model, which is a relatively direct means of including empiricism from turbulence experiments in the model. Phase II will extend the model to three-dimensional compressible flow and incorporate the model in a flow solver suitable for complex high-lift systems at all relevant Mach numbers.
