Research abstract

The military forces are relying heavily on transit cases to safeguard their sensitive equipment. However, extreme temperatures have caused equipment to fail during mission critical operations, especially with today''''s battlefields taking place inextreme climatic conditions. Cobra Design & Eng. along with its subcontractor SAIC have designed a Transit Case Thermal Management System (TCTMS) designed to fit standard transit cases capable of supporting COTS equipment ranging from 3U to 15U high. Thekey to the TCTMS is the use of thermoelectric coolers (TEC). The fruits of our labor during the Phase I design has proven that the TCTMS will operate unattended while maintaining a specified temperature range. We have selected commercially availablecomponents that drive the TCTMS. We also found in Phase I that the TCTMS can be reconfigured to accommodate larger heat loads. Therefore, we are proposing a second Higher Capacity TCTMS in Phase II. We plan on subjecting our TCTMS units to a fullcompliment of tests including electrical, functional and environmental to validate it''''s ability to survive the most extreme military conditions.Cobra Design & Engineering intends to pursue the marketability of the Transit Case Thermal ManagementSystem with Electronic Enclosure manufacturers and electronic cooling products. Due to the lack of commercially available thermal control units which are self maintaining, the potential need for this product is evident and has been verified by suppliers ofelectronic enclosures. To pursue this venture Cobra intends to develop a catalog ready data sheet showing the TCTMS as a configurable unit and commercially viable product. Cobra has designed-in totally commercially available components during Phase I.
