Research abstract
The DoD's desire for a small, lightweight engine which operates on heavy fuel can be satisfied by a charge-cooled roatary engine utilizing a stratified charge combustion process. The rotary engine has demonstrated the ability to operate on a stratified charge combustion process which utilizes direct fuel injection with spark ignition. This work was done by Curtiss-Wright and John Deere. Work has also been done at Moller Rotapower Technologies for Infinite Machines Corp. which demonstrated that we can duplicate the process. This proposal outlines a Phase I SBIR program which will demonstrate that the rotary is a good solution for a low weight, efficient, heavy fuel engine. The goal for the engine performance with respect to weight-to-power ratio of 2 Lb/Hp will be surpassed while demonstrating in Phase I that the goal for fuel consumption of 0.35 Lb/HpHr could be attained by applying our patented technology in Phase II. Phase I of the proposed research will demonstrate that a small lightweight rotary engine can satisfy the DoD's requirements for mobile power generation. With the completion of Phase II, a final design will be available for production for military and commercial use. Two plans are currently in place for the production of the gasoline version of the engine. These production plans should ensure government and private sector availability of the engine.
