Research abstract

During the storage of hydraulic components small amounts of water and other contaminants can cause corrosion on the metallic surfaces. The resultant corrosion can lead to failure of the component by plugging small orifices or by destroying critical surfaces around seals. To prevent this corrosion, additive such as barium dinonylnapthalene sulfonate (BDS) are dispersed/dissolved into the oil. While BDS is an excellent corrosion inhibitor, it also contains barium which is a heavy metal targeted for removal from military uses. This creates a challenge to find a new corrosion inhibiting compound with the same or better inhibition properties but without the heavy metal component. METTS proposes that non-heavy metal containing versions of these corrosion inhibitor compounds be considered, such as the calcium dinonylnapthelene sulfonate (CDS) and related salts. CDS and variants of CDS are currently used in paints and coatings as corrosion inhibitors on bridges and other facilities exposed to harsh environments. METSS possesses the needed expertise in corrosion inhibition and formulation in order to properly select and formulate a new corrosion inhibited hydraulic oil/fluid. Zinc phosphate corrosion inhibitors are also used extensively. Specifically, the organic and molybdate modified zinc phosphate see wide usage an provide excellent protection.
