Research abstract

65129 The design of photonics integrated circuits, to be used in the next generation of sensors for national security applications, requires new and powerful modeling techniques that are fast and not overly taxing on computer memory. This project will develop universal modeling tools for integrated photonics design using multi-scale physics simulation techniques such as a combination of adaptive wavelet and finite element methods. New photonics software packages will be built which can model semiconductor laser devices and nonlinear optics processes in active and passive waveguides, including photonic bandgap crystals. In Phase I, two model problems will be addressed with and without adaptive wavelet techniques to treat nonlinear optical processes in two-dimensional waveguides and in a semiconductor laser diode. The new finite element based solutions will be compared to finite difference and spectral beam propagation code results, and the feasibility of correctly simulating much more intricate devices using these new techniques will be assessed. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: Universal design software for the photonics and telecommunications markets should revolutionize the way photonics devices are designed. Such software should minimize design cycle time, now bogged down today by trial and error techniques and by the lack of firm simulation guidance.
