Research abstract
Not Available An autonomous field of sensor nodes needs to acquire and track targets of interest traversing the field. Small detection ranges limit the detectability of the field. As detections occur in the field, detections are transmitted acoustically to a master node. Both detection processing and acoustic communication drain a node's battery. In order to maximize field life, an approach must be developed to control detector thresholds and acoustic communication routing, as well as the initial placement of the field. To address these problems, ORINCON proposes the development of an adaptive threshold control scheme. This technique will minimize the power consumption while still maintaining the field-level probability of detection. Acoustic communication routing of the field will also be accomplished to minimize power consumption and therefore extend the life of the field. The control law to be developed is based on two approaches, evolutionary programming and integer programming. At the end of the Phase I effort, ORINCON will demonstrate these techniques in the Deployable Autonomous Distributed System (DADS) prototype master node for testing and evaluation in the system.
