Research abstract

Not Available The overall objective is the development of a non-chromate low VOC content primer that meets the requirements of the current flexible polyurethane (TT-P-2760) and earlier polysulfide (MIL-P-87112) aircraft primers. The primer is based on an epoxy-elastomer resin that forms a microscopic interpenetrating network on cure. The epoxy imparts strength, fluid resistance, and adhesion while the elastomer provides low temperature flexibility. The elastomer also acts as a reservoir for corrosion inhibitors and other functional components added to the primer. Chromate inhibitors will be replaced by new organic inhibitors that demonstrate comparable corrosion inhibition of Al 2024-T3 and Al 7075-T6. These inhibitors will partition into the elastomer and leach to active corrosion sites if the primer coating is damaged. In Phase I, primer formulations that exhibit the necessary flexural and corrosion resistant properties will be developed and characterized for ambient and low temperature flexibility, salt spray and filiform corrosion resistance. Collaboration with a coating manufacturer and aircraft company to conduct testing to appropriate Military and Federal standards is proposed. Phase II would involve refinement of primer formulations, address all aspects relevant to meeting Military Specifications and acceptance for use at depot facilities, as well as field-testing.
