Research abstract
On-going work in the area of human figure modeling supported by the U.S. Department of Defense has tended to focus on either the development of models of human performance in a system, or of human anthropometry and biomechanics, with only limited effortstowards linking different models. Some situations, however, require the ability to model dynamic work environments and scenarios. We are beginning to understand how models developed by the different engineering disciplines can talk to each other, allowingfor each system element to dynamically interact; what is needed is an engineering environment that will support this. The main technical objectives toward this end has been to develop and document an open environment framework for exchange of data betweenhuman performance modeling software, animated human figure software, and physical environment simulations, which includes situation knowledge databases. Progress was made towards that objective in the phase I effort. The phase I effort includedinvestigating different data exchange protocols, modeling tools, developing a language database and experimenting with the language using a simple Visual Basic demonstration application. The phase II effort would focus on implementation of an ApplicationProgrammer Interface (API) specification to support interaction between human figure models and human process performance models.
