Research abstract

76158-As the nation moves toward a hydrogen economy, a more economical and environmentally friendly way of spontaneously converting methane to hydrogen will be needed. This project will develop novel auto-thermal-reforming, metal-oxide-supported metal catalysts for use in a chemical looping system to promote the production of hydrogen. These catalysts should result in high methane conversion, CO selectivity, long term stability, and high mechanical strength while being considerably cheaper than noble metal catalyst alternatives. The chemical looping system also would cut down on emissions of CO2 and NOx and would allow for easier separation of reaction products. Phase I will initially synthesize the selected mixed metal catalysts and then pelletize these catalysts with several different binders. Thorough tests will be conducted on each catalyst for cyclic oxidation and reduction stability, partial oxidation of methane activity, CH4 conversion, CO selectivity, steam reforming activity, and mechanical strength. Preferred catalysts will then be optimized. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The auto-thermal catalysts should provide for the spontaneous conversion of methane to hydrogen under conditions that circumvent carbon deposition and green house gas emissions. The technology should make hydrogen production cheaper and more environmentally friendly.
