Research abstract

We will design a unique device that would clean and recirculate indoor air for the purpose of contrtuberculosis bacilli and other micro-organisms. The device would be based on the principle of particimpaction, a well-understood mechanism which is very effective for particles greater than 1 micrometis adequate for the collection of airborne bacteria). An air-cleaning device based on these principcompact and use less power than existing recirculation air cleaners. At the same time it would be eqin controlling airborne bacteria. It also offers the potential for sterilizing collected materialfeasibility of this approach will be evaluated through laboratory studies to test: (1) particle sizeefficiencies as a function of pressure drop, (2) loading capacity, and (3) adaptability to ultraviolapplications include the control of airborne micro-organisms in health clinics, dental offices, drugfor homeless people, social service agencies, police stations, and small jails. The device would alsthereby be very useful in the dwellings and offices of sensitive people.
