Research abstract

A very small router will be developed that is capable of connecting into a wireless internetwork. This router will be capable of providing users with digital communication channels at integer multiples of 9600 bits per second up to 57.6 Kbps. The router will learn the best paths through the network automatically and will adapt to changes in connectivity as network paths appear or are broken and as new routers are added to the network or disappear. The router hardware will include a communications processor and a spread spectrum radio. The radio will use synchronous code division techniques to provide single point to multipoint communications when transmitting. It is estimated that the router circuitry will require less than 3 square inches and weigh less than one ounce. Average power consumption is estimated to be less than 175 mwatts. A network could be created using up to 256 of these routers that would cover an area of up to 28 square miles.
