Research abstract

65308 The development of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) systems using power sources such as photovoltaics, small wind, electric storage, small fuel cell, and microturbines will require improvements in existing power converter technologies in order to make these systems feasible for widespread commercial or industrial use. Existing power converters are large in size, expensive, and limited in power capability. New power converter designs should be small, efficient, low cost, and modular for ease of use. This project will demonstrate the advantages of high frequency, pulse-width modulation (PWM), sine-wave inverter technology for a DC/AC power converter application. The technology includes proven low cost hardware, previously developed for volume production applications for advanced vehicle hybrid drive systems. Design features include operation over a 2:1 input voltage range, small size, and low cost modular package. Phase I will a design build, demonstrate, and test a 30 kW, single phase, 120 VAC, pulse width modulated DC/AC inverter. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: The technology should advance the development of efficient, high power (30kW) DC/AC inverter designs that are feasible for commercial and industrial applications.
