Research abstract

THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO EXPLORE THE APPLICATION OF MODERN NONLINEAR ADAPTIVE CONTROL AND STABILIZATION METHODS TO VISCOUS FLOW PHENOMENON. THE OBJECTIVES INCLUDE DRAG AND NOISE REDUCTION, AND CONTROL OF SEPARATION, TRANSITION, AND TURBULENCE. METHODS FROM RECENT RESEARCH IN CONTROL THEORY, SUCH AS ADAPTIVE AND ROBUST CONTROL METHODS, ARE BEING APPLIED TO PRACTICAL FLOW SITUATIONS; THEY ARE VALIDATED VIA SIMULATIONS USING ADVANCED SPECTRAL OR FINITE ELEMENT VISCOUS FLOW SIMULATIONS. RESEARCHERS ARE FOCUSING ON ACTIVE AND PASSIVE CONTROL OF INCOMPRESSIBLE VISCOUS FLOW BY COMPLIANT WALL TECHNIQUES AND OBTAINING A METHODOLOGY FOR STABILIZATION AND CONTROL WHICH IS ROBUST, ACCURATE, AND WELL SUITED TO REAL-TIME APPLICATIONS. THE VALIDATION REQUIREMENT OF DIRECTLY SIMULATING A FLOW CONTROL OR STABILIZATION PROCESS LEADS TO NUMERICAL SCHEMES WITH BETTER ACCURACY AND STABILITY.
