Research abstract

Monitoring human health and performance is critical to protecting and sustaining warfighters throughout military operations and training. Studies have evaluated soldier psychophysiological responses, and detriments to visual perception and complex motor performance were reported within 19 awake hours. Information on these and other physical, psychological, and physiological states would allow for appropriate adaptation and intervention. Wearables have emerged as a promising approach to performance monitoring, yet the measurements are often limited to physical traits. Detection of in-body biomarkers (e.g., within bodily fluid, breath) would expand military capabilities. Luna Labs USA, LLC therefore proposes to develop a subcutaneous biosensor for continuous, 24+ hour, in-body biomarker detection. The implantable sensor is biocompatible and capable of controlled biodegradation at the conclusion of the device lifetime, and information on warfighter readiness will be provided through an external, watch-like wearable.
