Research abstract

FOR MANY APPLICATIONS OF SOLVENT-FREE POLYMER ELECTROLYTES, SUCH AS PHOTOELECTROCHEMICAL CELLS USING ANIONIC REDOX SYSTEMS, IT WOULD BE ADVANTAGEOUS TO HAVE EXCLUSIVE ANIONIC MOBILITY, SINCE THE CATION DOES NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE ELECTROCHEMICAL PROCESSES AT THE ELECTRODES, BUT DOES PROVIDE DELETERIOUS LOCAL CONCENTRATION GRADIENTS WHICH GENERATE OPPOSING VOLTAGES. THE RESULT IS REDUCED POWER OUTPUT. A SPECIFIC ANIONIC CONDUCTOR WOULD LEAD TO HIGHER POWER OUTPUT FROM THE CELL. OTHER APPLICATIONS ARE GENERALLY IN THE AREA OF ION EXCHANGE MEMBRANES. PHASE I ISFOCUSED ON DEVELOPING SINGLE-ION CONDUCTORS WITH HIGH SPECIFIC ANION MOBILITY AT ROOM TEMPERATURE AND BELOW, WITH THE CATIONIC CHARGE COVALENTLY ATTACHED TO THE POLYMER BACKBONE.
