Research abstract
Repetitive use of hand tools, in particular those that compress the palm of the hand and are held wprecision grip may be a large part of the high incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) that is ovework place. This proposal is to conduct preliminary investigations into the relationship of carpal tthe design of handles used on squeegees and related hand tools such as pliers and screwdrivers. Theinvestigation will be to determine the feasibility of preventing CTS using the squeegee handle as aredesigning the standard shape. In Phase I we will investigate how handle shape and size affects CTPfeasibility of designing an ergonomically sound squeegee handle. If the results of this investigatioergonomically sound squeegee handle design will prevent CTS then in Phase II we will use the resultsand test prototype squeegee handles and develop the biomechanics to properly use these ergonomic hanprinting industry is actively seeking a solution to the rampant CTS problem.National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP)
