Research abstract

166 Long-Pulse 1.3 GHz Magnicon--Omega-P, Inc., 202008 Yale Station, New Haven, CT 06520-2008; (203) 458-1144 Dr. Achintya K. Ganguly, Principal Investigator Mr. George P. Trahan, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-97ER82447 Amount: $75,000 Linear colliders are of interest to the Department of Energy as principal tools for fundamental research in high energy physics. These facilities require radiofrequency amplifiers to produce the high powers and efficiencies required. The goal of this project is to develop a high power, high efficiency (>70%) source operating at 1.3 billion cycles per second for an electron-positron linear collider in the energy range of 1 trillion electron volts. The newly invented amplifier called a magnicon has already demonstrated the required efficiency at lower power level. Innovative designs will be introduced to operate high efficiency magnicon amplifiers at higher power levels suitable for linear collider applications. The Phase I project will provide the basic scientific design of the magnicon amplifier such that the amplifier delivers the required power with the maximum possible efficiency . The final engineering, fabrication and testing are to be carried out in Phase II. The experiment is to be performed in collaboration with the Yale University Beam Physics Laboratory. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The capital cost and the operational expense of the superconducting linear collider cannot be lowered to an acceptable level without the use of the new sources. In addition, these high power and high efficiency sources may be used to drive industrial linear accelerators for environmental cleaning, nuclear waste incineration and materials processing.
