Research abstract
Rechargeable batteries with high specific energy is of critical importance for applications where portability is an issue. It is of particular interest to the Army's current project to develop a protective suit for soldiers. Recent development in portable computers and communication devices, such as cellular telephones, have also created a need for batteries with ever higher energy storage capacity and longer cycle life. In addition, the impending market for electric vehicles has created an urgency to develop improved energy storage devices. The objective of this program is to develop significantly improved polymer electrolytes which will be incorporated into thin film rechargeable lithium cells which have the potential to leapfrog existing technology in both energy storage capacity and cycle life. Anticipated Benefits: The proposed program will result in rechargeable lithium batteries with high specific energy and long cycle life of importance to portable computers, cellular telephones and electronic devices. The proposed developments will also significantly enhance the prospects of the Army's project to develop protective suits for soldiers which includes air conditioning.
