Research abstract

Based upon a tightly coupled autonomous and operator managed control approach we intend to develop a generic and multi-adaptive control system methodology and algorithmic approaches which would lead to a fully implemented system. Control strategies and algorithms will be developed to enhance and maximize autonomous operation, yet, as robust and effective autonomous capabilities reach their limits the system would automatically transist between autonomous and operator managed control. Autonomy will handle the "major" tasks of the system while operator managed control will be responsible for close quarter precision manipulation. Automatic transition between autonomous and operator managed control is integral to the strategy. The operator managed portion will be based upon "telepresence". This insures maximum utilization and control speed of the robotic mechanisms. Localized transponder based (stealth in nature) sensor techniques will be included. This creates a robust and smooth transition between autonomous and operator control. The overall strategy points the way to multiple machines and mechanisms managed by a single operator. It will also include the methodology to rapidly integrate newly developed intelligent sensor systems and technologies. The same system becomes more and more autonomous as sensor technologies and knowledge based systems evolve and mature. Near term deployment of effective munitions automation handling systems. Robust system capable of operating within an unstructured and rapidly changing environment. Large commercial application potential by effectively automating materials handling for a multitude of industries. Actual deployment of autonomous systems.
