Research abstract

With the advent of spread-spectrum RF systems and dense electromagnetic environments, conventional methods of controlling antenna-to-antenna interference such as frequency management and adaptive beamforming are of limited utility. While spread spectrum offers resistance to some types of interference, that resistance is purchased at the cost of distributing interference power into the statistical system noice base. IAI proposes to apply new fast-learning Fuzzy CMAC neural network controllers to perform adaptive cancellation of interference to RF communications and navigation receivers from nearby sources and distant high-power jammers on the basis of signal direction-of-arrival. The new controllers will be especially useful for frequency-hopping UHF and VHF mobile/airborne communications. JTIDS, and GPS, systems in which antennas are not highly directional. The objective of the proposed Phase I effort is to develop a UHF version of the Fuzzy CMAC interference nulling controller and to evaluate its performance aganist typical interference waveforms in a dynamic simulation environment.
