Research abstract

THE NASA TECHNICAL SOLICITATION REQUESTED INNOVATIVE APPLICATIONS OF NEW MATERIALS FOR USE IN HEAT TRANSPORT AND COOLING. THIS PROPOSAL DESCRIBES AN EFFORT TO DEMONSTRATE THE FEASIBILITY OF USING COMPOSITE MATERIALS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF AMBIENT TEMPERATURE HEAT PIPES. CARBON COMPOSITE MATERIALS ARE RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR SIGNIFICANT STRENGTH TO WEIGHT RATIO AND STIFFNESS. THE SUCCESSFUL DEVELOPMENT OF THIS TECHNOLOGY WILL BE USED TO SIGNIFICANTLYREDUCE THE WEIGHT AND IMPROVE THE STRENGTH OF FUTURE SPACE THERMAL MANAGEMENT EQUIPMENT. THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF THE PROPOSED PHASE I PROGRAM WILL BE DEMONSTRATED THROUGH THE DESIGN, FABRICATION AND TEST OF A PROOF-OF-PRINCIPLE COMPOSITE HEAT PIPE.
