Research abstract

Information operations and information warfare (IO/IW) are critical capabilities for 21st century warfare. Because the skills of IO/IW are primarily cognitive, they are difficult to observe, measure, and train reliably. Aptima and its teammates will buildscenario-based assessment and training technology to help the 39th IOS assess and train the analytic skills of its students. We call this system TACTICS: Tutoring and Assessment Capability for Training IO/IW Critical Skills The software will advance thestate of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) by combining several modeling technologies for the first time in an ITS: text classification technology has been used to assess domain knowledge; models of expert reasoning have been used to assess proceduralskills such as computer programming; and business process models have been used to train corporate managers and executives in standard operating procedures. The products of this work will be an assessment and training shell for the military and commercialmarket, and training content for the 39th IOS in one domain of IO/IW: perception management, information assurance, or C4ISR. Aptima and its partners - Global Wisdom, Knowledge Evolution, and Metrica - bring to this project deep domain knowledge, uniqueCOTS software products, custom development capability, and a user-centered perspective on design and evaluation.
