Research abstract

COUNTS OF PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC TO JUSTIFY SIGNALS, SIDEWALKS AND OTHER FACILITIES IN OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT ARE DONE MANUALLY. COST OF TAKING THIS DATA WOULD BE REDUCED IF A RELIABLE, AUTOMATIC PEDESTRIAN DETECTION DEVICE WERE AVAILA-BLE. THE DEVICE MUST BE RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE, DURABLE, PORTABLE AND ADAPTABLE TO OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENTS. A LINEAR PESTRAIN SENSOR ARRAY (LPSA) IS PROPOSED FOR PHASE I RESEARCH WHICH WOULD MEET THESE OBJECTIVES. THREE LOW COST SENSOR TYPES (I.E. MICROWAVE DOPPLER, ACTIVE INFRA-RED AND PULSED ACOUSTIC) ARE TO BE TESTEDAND EVALUATED IN A TRADE -OFF STUDY. LIMITED ARRAY TESTING WOULD BE PERFORMED IN PHASE I TO CONFIRM FEASIBILITY OF THE BEST SENSOR CHOICE. EPSILON LAMBDA HAS EMPLOYED EACH OF THE SENSOR TYPES IN PEDESTRIAN DETECTION PRODUCT DESIGN AND IS FULLY AWARE OF THE MERITS AND LIMITATIONS OF EACH TYPE. RESULT OF PHASE I RESEARCH WILL BE A LPSA PRODUCT DESIGN WITH OPTIMAL MECHANICAL AND DETECTION FEATURES FOR THE APPLICATION DEFINED BY DOT-FHA.
