Research abstract

Perceptra Technologies proposes a groundbreaking solution to combat the fentanyl crisis: a compact, low-cost chemical and physical profiling device that integrates its proprietary swept-source Raman spectroscopy technology and multi-modal imaging module. This device will enable precise detection of low-purity fentanyl and cutting agents, as well as physical profiling of pills and powders by analyzing shape, color, size, and surface roughness. Paired with Perceptra’s advanced machine learning algorithms, this unified sensor fusion platform will provide the capabilities needed to identify and trace the source of seized drugs effectively and affordably. The fentanyl crisis, claiming over 100,000 lives annually in the U.S., poses significant detection challenges. Fentanyl is often present in sub-milligram concentrations in counterfeit drugs, and its production through disaggregated supply chains complicates tracing efforts. Current lab-based tools like HPLC and mass spectrometry are costly, time-consuming, and impractical for rapid field use, while existing handheld Raman analyzers lack the sensitivity, fluorescence suppression, and affordability required for widespread adoption. Perceptra’s swept-source spectroscopy system addresses these limitations by using a tunable laser and wide-area detector, achieving lab-grade sensitivity and low fluorescence in a handheld device. Perceptra is implementing this novel spectroscopy architecture on a photonic chip to dramatically reduce size and cost. With a track record in low-purity drug detection and silicon photonics integration, Perceptra aims to produce this device below $5,000, enabling large-scale adoption by law enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security. This transformative technology offers scalable, high-performance drug detection to disrupt illicit networks and combat the opioid crisis.
