Research abstract

40908 November 18, 1996 Reaction Engineering International This project will develop a computational tool for detailed simulations of two-phase, steady state, reacting flows in fossil fuel fired industrial boilers and furnaces. The simulation tool will utilize: an adaptive mesh to provide the localized node density required to compute a detailed simulation; multi-level solution strategies to promote robustness and efficiency in computing the solution on the adaptive mesh; and distributed computing to reduce the turn-around time to compute a detailed simulation. Phase I will demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed tool by developing an adaptive mesh Navier Stokes flow solver to simulate steady two-phase isothermal flows. In Phase II, the physics and numerical capabilities of the tool will be extended to include: (1) coal combustion and radiative transport models and (2) a distributed computing capability. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: The commercialization plan includes the delivery of special purpose computer codes and the provision of consulting / modelling services to industry.
