Research abstract
Xtrana, Inc., over the past five years has been developing a strategy for the capture of the nucleic acid of microbial pathogens onto a proprietary Xtra Bind matrix, amplifying specific target sequences using isothermal amplification chemistries, followed by immediate visual detection by lateral flow chromatography. We propose to apply this strategy to the detection of Salmonella using an integrated platform that will accommodate high throughput, yet with simple methods that do not require a sophisticated laboratory or highly trained personnel. Salmonella is currently monitors by the FSIS as a measure of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan effectiveness. Our goal is to obtain accurate and sensitive results within a given days work shift. This would enable more effective monitoring of HACCP providing for immediate and more rational corrective action.
