Research abstract

This proposal describes an approach to developing a high throughput modem for UHF SATCOM channels. The approach extends previous work on Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) including improved coding methods and mitigation techniques for eal-world channel impairments. The proposed approach builds on ViaSat's exceptional experience in managing SBIR Phase I and Phase II programs, and in transitioning those into succesful government and commercial Phase III products. ViaSat's exising VM-200 and AN/PSC-5 EMUT modems are powerful platforms for building the high data rate maodem. ViaSat also has a planned VME DAMA modem module that provides the "open evnironment" product the Navy needs. We also have the experitse and technology to integrate the new waveforms into the existing and planned UHF DAMA Network Control Systems. ViaSat already sells both government and commercial satellite and terrestrial modems that would benefit from inserting high bits/sec/Hz technology. We have in place an experienced domestic and international satellite marketing exectuive working full-time on commercial SATCOM to ensure a successful transition into the marketplace.
