Research abstract

ALPHATECH proposes a novel approach for prognostics, diagnostics, and health management (PHM) of interconnected aircraft subsystems, using hybrid reduced-order prognostic models and extensions to existing diagnostic FMECA analyses. This technology will beapplied at the area reasoner level of the aircraft, and tailored to the Propulsion System. In close collaboration with our partner, Rolls-Royce North America, we will develop models in this new framework, relevant to real propulsion system components suchas the LiftFan system for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). These models will be tested in software, and on a dedicated hardware reliability test rig provided by Rolls-Royce. Our goal in the Phase II of this research project is to demonstrate a workingprototype using this approach, and assess its performance for use as part of development of modern aircraft. The proposed technology would enable a system to anticipate and diagnose failures in a timely fashion thereby minimizing unscheduled maintenanceevents. Our approach is geared towards mechanical systems for which anticipating failures offers a large commercial benefit, as well as technical challenges. The technology could be used by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to ensure that thefailure predictions provided are accurate and valid as part of a real time system to monitor mechanical system failures.
