Research abstract

The objective of this proposal is to demonstrate the near-term feasibility of producing and deploying an enhanced type of distributed control system for sensor networks. The proposed architecture (called CHESS - Controller for HEterogeneous Sensor Systems)will improve situational awareness in asymmetric threat environments and make a significant contribution to the Navy's FORCEnet vision for network-centric warfare.By combining the attributes of distributed task management, language based control, and component self description, CHESS will provide the enhanced levels of flexibility and automation needed for realtime interoperation among heterogeneous sensors. CHESSwill provide a near-term implementation of future system concepts for network-centric sensor warfare. This will not only improve ISR capabilities for current operations, but will also provide an important experimentation tool for transformation effortsrelated to the FORCEnet Sensor Grid.
