Research abstract

This feasibility effort is directed toward implementing a portable, wireless linked, multi-spectral digital vision video assessment system to enable remotely located security personnel to rapidly validate the alarm and respond appropriately. The key technical innovations to be investigated during the proposed effort are: (1) usage of a second (optional) visible spectrum passive video sensor to provide information on intruder range, (2) usage of a third (optional) visible spectrum sensor to enable a high resolution view of the intruder, (3) usage of a thermal IR imager (optional), together with sensor fusion, to provide outdoor night vision capability, (4) digital processing of sensor video, including rapid AGC, to accommodate the wide dynamic range of ambient illumination, (5) usage of a MPEG video compression chip set to minimize video data rate, (6) usage of a commercial off-the-shelf spread spectrum modem to "downlink" and display remote scalable video surveillance data, and (7) usage of audio/ultrasound sensors to augment the video information. The anticipated intruder countermeasures are: (a) RF noise jamming, (b) cutting the video/power cable, and (c) illumination based jamming. The planned counter-countermeasures are usage of (a) spread spectrum communication modems, (b) autonomous, dispersed sensor operation, and (c) wide dynamic range operation. Other countermeasures and responses will be investigated during the execution of this effort. The Phase II effort will develop, deploy and evaluate the performance of a working multisensor prototype to generate a cost-benefit assessment of the proposed class of intruder prevention system. Early prototyping experiments using stereo cameras provide a high degree of confidence in exhibiting the feasibility of the proposed scalable intrusion prevention system.
