Research abstract

TODAYS TELEMETRY SYSTEMS USE BINARY FREQUENCY SHIFT KEYING (BFSK) MODULATION. THIS MODULATION FORMAT PROVIDES GOOD NOISE IMMUNITY AND IS EASY TO IMPLEMENT. HOWEVER, REQUIREMENTS FOR HIGHER DATA RATES MANDATES THE USE OF MORE BANDWIDTH EFFICIENT MODULATION FORMATS. QUADRATURE PHASE SHIFT KEYING (QPSK) IS FOUR TIMES MOREBANDWIDTH EFFICIENT THEN NON-COHERENT BFSK MODULATION. THE PROPOSED STUDY WILL EVALUATE VARIOUS MODULATION FORMATS TO DETERMINETHEIR PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS INCLUDING BANDWIDTH EFFICIENCY, BIT ERROR RATES (BERS), NOISE IMMUNITY, AND IMPLEMENTATION COSTS. THESE PARAMETERS WILL BE TRADED-OFF AND COMPARED TO THE OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO SELECT AN "OPTIMAL" SPECTRALLY EFFICIENT MODULATION FORMAT. THE MODULATION FORMATS TO BE STUDIED INCLUDEDM-ARY FREQUENCY SHIFT KEYING (MFSK), M-ARY PHASE SHIFT KEYING(MPSK), M-ARY QUADRATURE AMPLITUDE SHHIFT KEYING (MQASK), AND VARIOUS HYBRIDS. DESIGNS FOR BANDWIDTH EFFICIENT TRANSMITTERS AND RECEIVERS WILL BE PREPARED FOR DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATION DURING PHASE II. THIS EQUIPMENT WILL SUPPORT A VARIETY OF MILITARY AND COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS.
