Research abstract

Novel sources are needed to provide radio frequency (RF) power for the International Linear Collider (ILC). The realization of a compact, robust, and economical source of RF energy would substantially bolster the case for building the ILC. This project will develop a novel density-modulated device suitable for driving the ILC. Expertise in high performance computing, RF source design and microwave tube manufacturing will be employed to demonstrate the feasibility of this revolutionary RF power amplifier, which will have unparalleled compactness, power, and efficiency. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to the ILC application, other accelerators should benefit from these novel drivers, including the Fermilab¿s High Intensity Neutrino Source, the Tevatron Injector, and supporting drivers for muon collider development. Outside of the accelerator arena, the sources should have application in military directed-energy applications, such as Free Electron Lasers and High Power Microwave sources.
