Research abstract

A new type of polymer modified ceramic or 'ceramer' material with improved processing characteristics and oxidative stability is proposed for adhesively bonding advanced composites. The proposed research explores the feasibility of modifying cyanate ester resins with silicate-based ceramics to produce a new class of hybrid ceramic adhesives for aerospace applications. The ultimate objective of the program is to develop an easily processed adhesive with high strength and toughness, low density, minimal outgassing, and the heat resistance required for modern airframe construction. In the proposed study, the methodology for preparing these novel ceramic hybrids will be developed and structure-property profiles determined. The resulting material property relationships will be used in the design and fabrication of adhesive bonded composites for multi-role application in aerospace systems.
