Research abstract
RGS will develop tools and techniques to allow Navy R&D development contractors and Navy R&D managers to share a common environment for development, delivery, review and approval of technical information. Our innovative approach combines commercial-off-the-shelf tools to support enterprise-wide integration techniques to: (1) create a multi-media Integrated Research and Development Environment (IR&DE) architecture which incorporates design, engineering, logistics and program management information during SYSTEM DESIGN; (2) enable all IPPD team members to utilize this information pertaining to equipments and systems to be integrated into the IPDE for a new ship class (e.g. SC-21, LPD-17, CVN-76) during FLEET INTRODUCTION; and (3) provide the capability for IR&DE and IPDE information to be used by Fleet Commanders for ship and system LIFE CYCLE SUPPORT. The IR&DE will deliver information: a. FASTER because up-to-date information will be available to IPPD team members real-time instead of being repackaged and delivered as a physical product; b. CHEAPER because the manpower-intensive processes of repackaging and reproducing design, engineering and logistics information into conventional products are eliminated; and c. MORE ACCURATELY because up-to-date information is available immediately to allow more effective decision making and facilitating concurrent engineering practices. RGS will define the techniques, integrate COTS tools, design the architecture, provide a proof of concept demonstration, and define a transition strategy to implement the IR&DE concept within the Navy R&D community.
