Research abstract

Current designs for the fundamental power couplers to be used in the International Linear Collider (ILC) would entail great expense and excessively long conditioning times. This project will develop a coupler design that would require little radio frequency (RF) processing and would be significantly less expensive to build. The new design will be based on the cylindrical TE01 mode and other over-moded technologies developed for the X-band RF distribution system of the NCLTA. During Phase I, a TE10 to TE01 mode transducer, to be used a part of a power coupler in the ILC, will be designed, built, and tested. A detailed report of the suitability of this over-moded waveguide technology for the ILC power coupler will be prepared. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: In addition to the ILC, over-moded power couplers for superconducting cavities should find application in many world-wide accelerator projects, such as SNS, Jefferson Lab upgrade, RIA, and TESLA.
