Research abstract
The Phase I Program objective is to define the architecture of a UAV-borne LPI relay/interrogator which is inter-operable with all currently fielded and in-development survival radios. The architecture will primarily use suitable OTS equipment at the highest practical level of integration in order to minimize the cost and risk of system development. The proposed approach provides a hub for three communications links: SATCOM, and LOS base and remote transceivers. Provisions are made for bent-pipe relay between base and remote transceivers of like modulation formats, or a baseband processing path between any two of the three links. The design will accommodate various types of LPI or non-LPI signal formats. The system also provides for survival beacon interrogation and location without a homing system, as currently utilized under manned CSAR procedures. Data required for beacon location is gathered by the Relay/Interrogator and forwarded to the base transceiver for processing. The ability to information from downed pilots or other individuals at OTH (over the horizon) distances is a tremendous advantage. A UAV, acting as a backup or surrogate satellite and equipped with interrogation and relay capabilities, may perform the search and identification functions at distance with minimal risk to human life.
