Research abstract
Ceracom Inc. will use innovative composite manufacturing technologies to develop revolutionary armor system for use as panels for military and commercial vehicles. The armor system is lightweight, hard, stiff and tough so that it can withstand blastfragments, pressure waves from blast mines, and ballistic rounds. It also can withstand the rough handling and conditions found in an operational environment unlike current tile technologies. It can be shaped during fabrications to contours that arerequired for vehicle applications. Installation will be by mechanical attachment, welding or metal crimping. The fracture toughness and the unique designs allow multiple hit capabilities and the ability to withstand consecutive multithreats. Thefunctionally graded armor system with modulus matching gives an integrated armor system that is resistant to delamination. The base constituents help to distribute the energy of the impact throughout the armor by spreading out the impact force andwithstanding the stress of high impact energy from the ballistic threat. Transition of the Embedded ArmorO to Phase III will establish a novel vehicle armor panel that is lightweight, tough, and strong with multihit capabilities. This armor system canbe economically fabricated into the variety of shapes needed for the vehicle designer. It is easy to attach by the standard attachment procedures like metal crimping, welding, and fasteners. The commercial sector has a significant market for lightweightvehicle armor. Commercial applications in the private sector include armor for vehicles for executive transport, money and securities transport, and public transport. The private sector market is increasing dramatically and once proven, Ceracom's'Embedded ArmorO has a clear path to capture a significant part of this market.
