Research abstract
This proposed work aims at deeloping two major new innovqative capabiliities for the High-Order Godunov (HOG) technology. The first new capability is in the area of low Mach number problems; new code based on the projection method scheme will be developed for complex 3D multiphase flow fields, in particular, the post explosion cloud rise phenomenon includin gparticle transport. The second new capability is in the area of material modeling, e.g., heavy gases, soil models and metals under strong pressure loading. Current DNA HOG codes do not allow simulations of problems involving such materials due to the requrirement that the Equation of State (EOS) be convex. The new capability will eliminate this restriction and allow nonconvex EOS; this is a much needed, improved technique fo the HOG solver which will allow treatment of solid-solid phase changes, explosive product gases, etc. in complex shock dynamics problems. during Phase I and the follow-on Phase II hte two new capabilities will be developed, validated and used for comprehensive 3D simulations and phenomenological studies. We propose to calculate and analyze cloud rise using available experimental data (e.g., the Priscilla data base) and perform an application study (e.g., foam modeling or soil impact) using the new capabilities.
