Research abstract

Triton proposes to develop stable, variable transmission, electrochromics with fast switching time for Helmet Mounted Displays (HMD). The proposed technology is easily amenable to the fabrication on curved surfaces, and transferable to large-scaleproduction. In Phase I, Triton demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed technology to meet or exceed the Army requirements for HMD systems. The advantages, over traditional liquid crystalline display technology, of speed, contrast, power consumption, weight, stability, and processing of this technology will be explored and evaluated during the Phase II effort. By the end of Phase II Triton will produce a prototype electrochromic variable combiner for integration into a see through display. The PhaseIII development of the technology will be accelerated to produce a usable product for the Army within six to twelve months. To this end, Triton is building relationships with visor producers and suppliers to quickly integrate the technology intoproduction. The proposed technology will be usable by military, government, and civilian organizations. The technology will allow users to travel between light and dark environments with minimal loss of sight due to contrast changes. Aircraft pilots, aswell as outdoor sports enthusuists (such as skiers and mountain bikers) will be able to enjoy the benefits of maintaining sight during fast changes in lighting conditions.
