Research abstract
65123 Small lithium-ion batteries containing fluorinated low lattice energy lithium salts are used in computers, cellular phones, and cameras. However, the mass producion of full size batteries for use in electric vehicles (EV) is problematic because the electrolytes derived from these salts are far too costly and are potentially hazardous to the environment. This project will develop and employ novel cost-effective and environmentally friendly lithium salts for mass production of full size lithium-ion batteries for EV applications. Phase I will prepare a new class of inexpensive lithium salts and assess the properties of derived electrolytes with respect to a standard electrolytic system. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by awardee: New cost-effective lithium salts should become available for large-scale production of full-size lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles as well as for consumer products such as computers, camcorders, and cameras. These materials will meet requirements at much lower cost than those currently available, while being more favorable to the environment.
