Research abstract

A test method and tester conceptual design will be developed for the measurement of steady-state loads, dynamic loads, and the extraction of force coefficients for centrifugal pump impellers. The method and tester will employ the use of statically and dynamically calibrated magnetic bearings for both axial and radial excitation and support. The use of the calibrated magnetic bearings will eliminate the need for conventional force measurement systems which typically have low natural frequencies which limit tester speed and test frequency range. Uncertainty and rotordynamic analyses will be performed to evaluate the feasibility of the concept and define its useful operating range.
